Reinstating the market hall to support local business and culture

Goole Market Hall

Group Ginger's designs have brought this unused market hall back to life, allowing the building to return to its former glory at the centre of activity within the town, offering flexible community and cultural space incorporating a contemporary food hall and market garden.

The scheme was commissioned by the East Riding of Yorkshire Council, whose forward-looking brief for the project sought to create a vibrant focal point in Goole, drawing in people from across the town and addressing the low levels of footfall which were depleted even prior to the pandemic.

Group Ginger’s reinvention ‘edited’ the original market hall to provide flexible new multifunctional space for community events, pop-up activities and entertainment, as well as food kiosks for local independent traders.

The design proposals open up the principal elevation to Estcourt Terrace, removing a bricked-up archway and replacing it with glass to create a greater street presence and allow passers-by a visual connection and tantalising glimpses of the activity inside. A new market garden and decorative metalwork were introduced to Estcourt Terrace, enhancing the civic importance of the building and offering a place to meet and dwell, while a new metal trellis with climbing planters and benches flanked the door to create a calm and attractive front entry.

On the north elevation, a new polycarbonate facade was inserted to create a contemporary design character and increase natural daylight to the interior, with polycarbonate chosen for its improved thermal performance over glass and its more sustainable credentials.
