Reinstating the market hall to support local business and culture

145 Goole Market Hall

Goole Market Hall

Designs to bring this unused market hall back to life, allowing the building to return to its former glory at the centre of activity within the town, offering flexible community and cultural space incorporating a contemporary food hall and market garden.

The scheme has been commissioned by the East Riding of Yorkshire Council, whose forward-looking brief for the project seeks to create a vibrant focal point in Goole, drawing in people from across the town and addressing the low levels of footfall which were depleted even prior to the pandemic.

Group Ginger’s proposed interventions ‘edit’ the original market hall to provide flexible new multifunctional space for community events, pop-up activities and entertainment, as well as food kiosks for local independent traders.

The design proposals include:

• Opening the principal elevation to Estcourt Terrace, removing a bricked-up archway and replacing with glass to create greater street presence, allowing passers-by visual connection and tantalising glimpses of the activity inside.

• Introduction of a new market garden and decorative metalwork to Estcourt Terrace, enhancing the civic importance of the building and offering a place to meet and dwell. New metal trellis with climbing planters and benches flank the door to create a calm and attractive front entry.

• Insertion of a new polycarbonate facade on the north elevation to create a contemporary design character and increase natural daylight to the interior. Polycarbonate was selected because it has better thermal performance than glass and is a more sustainable option.

• New food kiosks to the perimeter of market hall provide an outlet for local independent businesses.

• New doors and canopies to improve the arrival experience and provide greater comfort and weather protection. New double glazed openable rooflights to improve thermal efficiency and natural ventilation.

• New engineered oak flooring and new ancillary spaces including more toilets, office, and back of house space.
