Royal Armouries Museum Strategic Vision

Group Ginger and Arup have developed a strategic vision to rethink how the museum uses its estate to become one of the world’s most exciting museums, offering a compelling and relevant narrative on world and British history offered through the lens of arms and armour.

The Royal Armouries Museum is the UK’s national museum of arms and armour, housing thousands of incredible objects, from ancient times to the present day. From Japanese samurai to iconic movie props, from Henry VIII’s armour to an Indian war elephant; the museum’s exhibits explore how their collection has shaped history, society, art and culture through permanent displays, daily live shows and combat demonstrations

The study identifies ways for the museum to become the focus for learning, study and research of arms and armour; to earn recognition as an internationally important destination which is attractive to diverse audiences. It also sets out the potential to rationalise the museum’s estate and assets to ensure the museum has a sustainable future which provides an environment for the encouragement of learning and appreciation of the collection in an exemplary modern museum environment.

The museum is now using the strategic vision study as the basis for a masterplan procurement exercise.
