Lower Eastfield Farm
Lower Eastfield Farm is a collection of derelict existing agricultural buildings and a farmhouse which forms part of the Thornely Taylor Estate. Lying in the foothills of the south Pennine range the farm benefits from panoramic views of the beautiful surrounding open countryside. The design refurbishes extends and creates new accommodation to provide three new homes, an apple barn, orchard and hay loft.
The farmstead is organised around a working courtyard which links the original long stone barn, farm house, and cattle pens. The design retains the relationship between the buildings and re-imagines the accommodation as a series of linked dwellings. The courtyard becomes a shared common space for the new homes and a shared guest suite; providing access and a shared protected amenity space. Each home has a generous entrance vestibule accessed from the courtyard which also provides access through to private garden areas dedicated to each new dwelling. The internal arrangements have been considered to accentuate their individual relationships with the surrounding countryside to maximise views and take best advantage of the setting.
The original Edwardian farm house is retained; the lower section is replaced to provide a new contemporary addition to the farm buildings. The collection of different buildings form, mass and material is celebrated retained and enhanced to maintain the rich ecology of buildings developed over time as a functioning working farm. The new dwellings and use are the latest occupation of the buildings which bring life and activity back to the redundant buildings.
The new apple barn; orchard and hayloft re-introduce an active working relationship with the surrounding agricultural land and also provide diverse new habitats. The new and refurbished agricultural buildings are lighter weight than their domestic counterparts constructed in timber and steel with an expressed and in part exposed structure. Their difference further adds to the diverse and eclectic collection of buildings which make up the renewed farmstead.
